The neighbourhood

Sololaki is one of the oldest planned districts in Tbilisi, set on the slope below the Mother of Georgia statue and a short climb from Freedom Square.

From the late 18th century onward, the city’s merchant families built their townhouses here, earning the area a reputation as the “Caucasian Paris”. Many houses still keep painted entrance halls, carved wooden balconies and shared inner courtyards like the one this building opens onto. Asatiani Street itself is lined with 19th and early 20th century facades.

Within walking distance:

• Gudiashvili Square, about 3 minutes

• Writers’ House of Georgia and its garden restaurant, Cafe Littera, about 6 minutes

• Vino Underground, the city’s first natural wine bar, about 7 minutes

• Freedom Square, about 8 minutes

• Sioni Cathedral, about 10 minutes

• Mother of Georgia statue, about 15 minutes on the hill path

• National Botanical Garden, about 15 minutes

• Abanotubani sulphur baths, about 15 minutes

Day to day, the area feels residential rather than touristic. Neighbors chat in courtyards, local bakeries open early, and small wine bars fill the side streets around Machabeli and Tabidze in the evening. The Old Town lies a short walk downhill, so guests can reach the main sights on foot and come back to a quieter street at night. The hill paths above the district are popular for morning walks and city views.

Sololaki is a safe, central neighborhood, and the surrounding streets are well patrolled.

Getting around

Freedom Square metro station is about an 8-minute walk away, on the line that runs to Rustaveli, Avlabari and the train station.

Tbilisi’s metro, buses and minibuses all accept a Metromoney card or a contactless bank card, and a single ride is inexpensive. Bolt and other taxi apps work across the city and are an easy option late at night or with luggage. Need a ride from Tbilisi International Airport? Wehost offers a direct airport transfer, just let us know when you book.
