The neighbourhood

Bagebi is a residential district on the slopes above Vake, where the city gives way to pine-covered hills. Locals often call it "New Vake", and the air here is noticeably fresher than in the centre.

The name translates as "gardens" in Georgian, and the district still lives up to it, with trees on every slope and modern complexes such as Metra Park set among them.

Day-to-day essentials are close by:

Zgapari supermarket on the Tskneti Highway, about 4 minutes on foot

Restaurant Bagebi, serving traditional Georgian food, about 8 minutes on foot

The University-Bagebi cable car, a short gondola ride across the Vere gorge to the university campus, about 12 minutes on foot

For green space and culture, the larger sights are a few minutes by car:

Vake Park, the city's largest central park, with fountains, sports courts and an aerial tramway, around 5 minutes by taxi

Turtle Lake, with walking trails, pedal boats and lakeside cafes, around 10 minutes by taxi

The Open Air Museum of Ethnography, traditional houses from every Georgian region, on the road to Turtle Lake

Bagebi suits guests who want space, fresh air and a slower pace, with the rest of Tbilisi a short ride away. Evenings here are calm. For restaurants, wine bars and cafes, Chavchavadze Avenue in Vake is a short taxi ride down the hill.

The area is safe and well-patrolled, popular with families and long-stay residents.

Getting around

Public transportation in Tbilisi is affordable and convenient. Metro and buses cost just 1 GEL per ride and allow free transfers within an hour. You can pay directly by card. For route details and schedules, we recommend downloading the TTC app. Bus stops are located almost everywhere in the city.

Bolt and other taxi apps are widely used and inexpensive, and a ride to Freedom Square takes around 20 minutes depending on traffic.
