Gudauri: what to know about the winter season
The season, getting there, weather conditions and what to look for when choosing an apartment.
Gudauri is one of Georgia's largest ski resorts, located at an altitude of 2,196 metres. Most of the ski runs are on open slopes, making weather conditions particularly important.
The ski season generally runs from December to April. January and February are the most reliable months for snow. In March, the days are longer and sunnier, with milder temperatures around midday.
Gudauri is about 120 kilometres from Tbilisi, and the drive takes around two and a half hours. If you are not used to driving on snowy mountain roads, it is better to book a transfer.
During heavy snowfall, the road can be closed for several hours or longer. If you have a flight to catch, it is worth allowing an extra day and checking road conditions before you set off.
When choosing an apartment, look for easy access to the ski lifts, somewhere to store your skis, a place to dry your boots and reliable heating. In Gudauri, these can matter more than the view.
